'Philly McMahon plays the game on the edge' is a sentence we've heard a lot of the last few days. It was certainly repeated quite a bit on the Sunday Game following the All-Ireland football final.
McMahon marked Colm Cooper in Dublin's triumph over Kerry, keeping the four-time All-Ireland winner scoreless while himself scoring an excellent point.
Cooper was subjected to the full extent of the Ballymun man's style, something which led to a little bit of frostiness between the two at the final whistle.
Speaking to the Irish Times, McMahon disclosed what was said at full time.
Yeah, there was a little bit of a stand-off at the end. We spoke then and I said, ‘This is the way I play football, this is what you have to do to win a game . . . I am going to do what I can to beat you and you are going to do what you can to beat me’. And he said, ‘Fair enough’ and then we shook hands. He is a very humble player, he said well done and we went our separate ways.
The Dublin corner back and Kieran Donaghy both spoke to RTE on Monday about the flashpoint involving them both toward's the end of Sunday's game.
Both players were of the opinion that 'what happens on the pitch stays on the pitch'.
