It has been confirmed this evening that Pauric Fanning is the man Waterford have chosen to replace Derek McGrath in charge of the county's senior hurlers.
Having most previously worked with Davy Fitzgerald in Wexford, Fanning was also involved in the Clare man's management team when he oversaw the job Fanning is now in possession of.
Congratulations to Pauric Fanning who has been appointed as Waterford Senior Hurling Manager for 2019!
Also to Benji Whelan who has been elected as Waterford Senior Football Manager for 2019!— Waterford GAA (@WaterfordGAA) September 17, 2018
It has similarly been confirmed by Waterford's county board that Benji Whelan will join Fanning's backroom team. It is believed that the full compliment of his staff will also include a number of former Waterford hurlers.
Following an impressive manager in Derek McGrath, Waterford reached the 2017 All-Ireland final only to be defeated by Galway.
Last time out, unable to take advantage of the new home/away arrangement in the Munster championship, Waterford suffered a difficult year and failed to make it beyond the provincial games.
It was believed that Mattie Kenny had been among the front-runners to replace McGrath in Waterford. A two-time All-Ireland club championship winner with Cuala, recent developments regarding the senior hurling job in Dublin may have had some impact on Kenny's interest.
