Paul Galvin was on 2FM this morning, speaking to Nicky Byrne and Jenny Greene. During the course of the conversation, he predicted that amateurism within the GAA could be on the way out.
I think it is going to be hard to fend it off. People say that professionalism is unsustainable, I look at it now and I think amateurism is becoming unsustainable.
It is conventional wisdom that the GAA's financial position is extremely healthy at the minute, and Galvin finds it hard to see how they're going to justify not paying players any longer and he highlighted the Sky deal as a positive development for players.
For players and the time they are putting into it, the money that is in the game, there is so much money in the game. I would be interested to see, watch this space, on how they can justify the income and the revenue and tell players ‘best of luck and thanks for everything’.
The Sky thing is a big deal, a big departure for the GAA and I would see it as being a positive thing if players begin to see some benefits.
