Certain Kerrymen have made it part of their duty in life to crusade for good grammar. Con Houlihan, for example, remarked that "a man who misuses the apostrophe is capable of anything".

It's a different era today, but another Kerryman is equally concerned about the proper use of a more modern convention of language. Paul Galvin dedicates his Sunday Times column to a meandering of thought about Twitter, WhatsApp, and social media, in which he sets out the decent etiquette of when and when not to @ him, the recent incident between Evan Comerford and Paddy Russell and Daragh O'Sé's recent Irish Times column on Twitter providing the touchstone.

The column is hugely entertaining, and we can't recommend it highly enough.

Among its myriad highlights is a slightly surreal tale of Galvin recalling his favourite app from his playing days: Fake-A-Text, which summons up a false WhatsApp conversations scripted by the user. (Note: this app may or may not have been used for some Pulitzer-worthy journalism on this website).

Here's the Galvin story in question:

Back in 2013 I wrote an imaginary row between myself and the Kerry masseur Ger Keane over an appointment time and sent a screenshot of the conversation to Marc O' Sé. I had been setting the scene for Marc in the previous days, so he took the screenshot as proof we had a fall-out.

I forgot to tell him it was this new app I was using and he spent time trying to mend the relationship behind the scenes before I remembered.

I called Ger The Budda for his serene nature and we all loved him. You couldn't fall out with him.

Seek the column out in today's Sunday Times. There's a lot more besides the above.
