In recent times, RTÉ's GAA coverage has come under some heavy scrutiny.

The controversy surrounding the use of GAAGO has resulted in more attention being placed on the broadcasting of Gaelic games. Placing so many matches behind a paywall has been a controversial move, while some are also unimpressed with the product on offer from out national broadcaster.

RTÉ's GAA coverage has certainly undergone quite the overhaul in recent times, with a number of long standing on screen personalities being moved on. That has resulted in a more sanitised offering, one that has not been all that popular with the viewers.

Pat Spillane knows the inner workings of RTÉ's GAA broadcasting better than most, having spent three decades as a pundit on the channel before his departure in recent years.

However, he is not impressed with their current offering.

Writing in the Sunday World, the Kerry legend summed up why The Sunday Game has lost its appeal in recent times, with the All-Ireland football final the latest example.

The Sunday Game was another lowlight. OK, I know what you’re thinking, an old man reminiscing about how things were better in his day.

But as someone who was proud to have been part of The Sunday Game for 30 years, and claiming a small role in making such an iconic programme, it saddens me to see what it has become. And it’s not just me, everyone else is thinking the same.

It has become stale, boring, sanitised, safe, too rehearsed and scripted, it is no longer a much-watched programme. It needs competition and a good kick up the arse because it is not good enough.

This is an opinion that quite a few GAA fans seem to share, with RTÉ's coverage lacking something in recent times.

It will be interesting to see how they address this issue in the near future.
