Brolly And Spillane Give Brutal Assessment Of Mayo And Roscommon's Quarter-Final

Mayo and Roscommon played out a compelling draw in their All-Ireland quarter-final at Croke Park on Sunday afternoon.

It was a game which saw a manic opening 12 minutes in which three goals were scored. The final moments were also manic - though, like most the intervening time, it was low on quality.

On RTÉ after the final whistle, Pat Spillane said that though it had been exciting, it had also been an 'awful game'.

It was fully committed football, very exciting but let's be brutally honest: it was an awful game of football. It was a very low standard of football, defences dominated.

It looked like two teams who were afraid to lose and didn't know how to win. They didn't have the guts to go and win the game. It was a disappointing contest, both have a lot of work to do.

Joe Brolly felt that Mayo have regressed and are now 'light years' away from winning an All-Ireland.

It was very frantic and it was very enjoyable. It was very important for Roscommon to get that game in Croke Park because it was a big step up and it was a new experience.

Mayo were very poor. I said earlier in the year, 'This is it, they're gone,' the prospect of an All-Ireland is gone. They are light years away from that.

The two O'Shea boys today were anonymous; Cillian O'Connor was anonymous; Diarmuid O'Connor anonymous. They have so many problems. Andy Moran for all the fact that he wasn't able to run and win the ball, he was still their best forward.

The centre of their defence was wide open. If Roscommon had a bit more zip, they would have scored four or five goals.

There was nothing between the two teams and that's a true reflection.

The difference between Mayo losing and drawing was Lee Keegan. How long can one man continue to drive you on like that?

Colm O'Rourke also said that he didn't see either side winning an All-Ireland.

Spillane added that if either Mayo or Roscommon win this year's All-Ireland, he will 'eat his shirt'.

It was full of passion, full of physicality. The fitness levels, the effort, the commitment, the atmosphere was brilliant. It was low quality.

None of these two teams, barring a miraculous improvement, none of these two teams will be winning an All-Ireland.

I'll eat my shirt if they do.
