Kerry legend Pat Spillane has been writing in his Sunday World column for decades, covering all of the hot topics and discussions in the world of Gaelic football.
The majority of those columns have been about the inter-county game, but in recent years, due to the split season, the whole campaign is done by July and we only have the club game to focus on.
A part of this design was to put the spotlight on the club game, something which has been rather successful when you consider that you can now watch local championship matches, from senior level right down to junior on your TV via some sort of streaming service.
The club game has become much more important now that it stands out on its won, separate from the county scene, and although it took some time to adjust to this, it has been a gradual improvement year on year.
However, Spillane is a staunch opposer of the split season, and lately most of his columns have been based on that, or the new rules that are being introduced by Jim Gavin's Football Rules Committee.
The Templeone man has in no way changed his stance on the split season, but in his latest column, he admitted that he never gave the club game the attention it deserved and he sat down last weekend to take as much of it in as possible.

"Hands up. I’ve been writing this column for a long time and I admit that I’m guilty of not giving the club game the attention it deserves.
"I couldn’t but embrace everything about last weekend and the club. The colour, the atmosphere and in particular the celebrations that unite communities. Christ, if you could bottle that wouldn’t it be wonderful?
"My message today is this: Shout it out loud and clear, the clubs are special. They are the beating heart of the GAA, the foundation on which everything else is built."
Now that we are entering the provincial championship stages, the standard of club football is really elevated to a new level, not as high as inter-county of course, but it isn't a million miles away.
If the new rules do come in, and it looks like they will, then this current club campaign will be the last one with the traditional rules in place.
Hopefully it is a good one.
