Picking an All-Star every year is a difficult task, with a number of players who miss out having a genuine case to be included at the end of every season. With only 15 spaces up for grabs, it is inevitable that not everyone will be happy about the selections made.
If that is an issue each season, we can only imagine how difficult it must be to pick a team that covers half a century.
That was the task undertaken by Peter Canavan, Oisín McConville, and Peter O'Mahony recently, who picked their 15 for 50 PwC All-Star team of the last 50 years. It was quite the side.
Of course, you could have made a case for a number of other players to be included. Pat Splliane has now given his own team of the last 50 years, making a few changes.
Pat Spillane's All-Star Team of the Last 50 Years
Writing in his column for the Sunday World, the RTÉ pundit made his own selection. Here is the team he put forward:
Stephen Cluxton (Dublin)
Robbie O'Malley (Meath)
John O'Keefe (Kerry)
Páidí Ó Sé (Kerry)
Lee Keegan (Mayo)
Cian O'Sullivan (Dublin)
James McCarthy (Dublin)
Brian Fenton (Dublin)
Jack O'Shea (Kerry)
Paul Flynn (Dublin)
Larry Tompkins (Kildare/Cork)
Colm Cooper (Kerry)
Mikey Sheehy (Kerry)
Matt Connor (Offaly)
Peter Canavan (Tyrone)
The RTÉ pundit also included an extended list of his 50 best players from that time time period.
While this is a largely similar side to the one selected by Cavan, McConville, and O'Mahony, although Spillane has made six changes.
One of them includes taking himself out of the side, although most would have him as an automatic selection.
The trio mentioned above selected Tony Scullion ahead of Robbie O'Malley, Seamus Moynihan over John O'Keefe, Kieran McGeeney over Cian O'Sullivan, Trevor Giles instead of Paul Flynn, Spillane over Mikey Sheehy, and Padraic Joyce in the place of Matt Connor.
There are certainly a few toss-ups in that group.
