Pat McEnaney and Cork secretary Frank Murphy disagree about refereeing. In his annual report, Murphy expressed his dissatisfaction with the standard of inter-county refereeing at the present time.
In hurling, he said there were far too refs at the top level, though he did allow that those at the top were of a good standard. He reserved his biggest criticism for the refereeing on the football scene, accusing football refs of inconsistency.
Some of the refereeing in inter-county senior football during the past season has been far from satisfactory and some refereeing performances have had an undue influence on the outcome of games.
However, McEnaney does not agree. In fact, he thinks the precise opposite.
It’s fair to say that disappoints me, in the sense that you think Frank would know what’s happening on the ground, but the opposite is the case.
The standard of football refereeing that’s available at the moment is much stronger than it is in hurling. I’m surprised that Frank has that opinion considering his knowledge of the game.
McEnaney continues to fearlessly tweak the noses of hurling folk who say he should have nothing to do with the sport.
