Kieran McGeeney now joins the illustrious list of men who have both captained and managed their county to All-Ireland glory.
22 years on from climbing the Hogan steps with the number six jersey on his back, he retraced those very footsteps on Sunday, this time as manager of his county.
When you think of 'Geezer' you think of leadership, determination and mental fortitude, his reputation is almost folklore at this point.
However, such reputations can grow legs, and the truth normally isn't quite as grand or as extreme as the legend claims, but in Geezer's case, it probably doesn't do him justice.
Speaking on the GAA Social Podcast after the All-Ireland final, Armagh legend and former team-mate of McGeeney Oisin McConville, explains just how dedicated to the cause his ex captain was as a player.
He just always wants more, nothing is ever good enough, he always wants more.
"You know when it's the Thursday training before championship and you think you're going down, a wee bit of shooting, a wee bit of tactical stuff, maybe a few kick-outs - nothing was ever good enough for him.
"In his eyes it wasn't, in my eyes it was grand, '100% no bother, this is going okay', but 'okay' was not good enough."

The aura of Kieran McGeeney
Of course you have heard these sentiments before describing McGeeney from players that played alongside him, or indeed the current Armagh stars who play under him, but McConville then tells a story that hits it perfectly on the head.
I'll give you an example - myself, Benny Tierney, Jarlath Burns, and a guy called Peter Loughran, who used to play.
"We were all heading down to training and Benny Tierney gave us a heads up because we were doing three nights a week, travelling up to Lurgan all the time, and Benny said 'listen, Geezer is going to ask us to do the fourth night.'
"Peter Loughran was in the back of the car and he goes 'well I'll tell you one thing, if he asks me I'll be telling him absolutely no chance are we doing a fourth night.
"When we get down there me and Benny get Geezer to the side and say 'make sure you ask Lougho if we're doing a fourth night if that's okay.'
"So we're all in the changing rooms, and Geezer goes 'listen lads, we're just not doing enough, we need a night for skills, we just need to buy ourselves an extra night, so we're going to go four nights, is everybody happy with that?'
"He looked around the changing rooms and he looked right at Peter Loughran and he says 'Peter, are you okay with that?'
"And Peter Loughran says 'I think we could maybe go five.'"
In Loughran's defence, it would take a very brave man to look directly at Kieran McGeeney and tell him. to his face that he wasn't going to do the extra training.
It obviously paid off in the end as they went on to become All-Ireland champions, and that same attitude is clearly still working in the modern game as Armagh top the bill once again as the proud owners of the Sam Maguire trophy.
