An underrated source of income for politicians is the venerable GAA Club Lotto. Virtually every club in the country runs them under some guise or another, and will often offer cash prizes and big match tickets as prizes. Visiting politicians will generally support the local draw, to the extent that Enda Kenny this week won a prize from a Longford GAA club draw for the third time. This week, he won €25 in the Clonguish club lotto, the third time he has scooped the prize.
While Kenny has showered himself in cold, hard cash thanks to the Longford club, not all clubs around the country offer cash prizes. An honourable exception is Kilclonfert GAA club in Offaly, who have assembled perhaps the most Irish set of prizes ever to grace the humble GAA draw.
iRadio and the Leinster Express have flagged the draw in recent days, which has as its top prize a 30' x 20' steel shed. Second place can be consoled with custody of a pure breed heifer, while the final podium spot is awarded a 12-inch concrete saw. Below that, prizes include a €300 holiday voucher, a lamb, a pallet of briquettes and a load of turf.
The draw, by the way, takes place at the Ploughing Championships next month.
