In a surprising move, the Munster GAA council has banned the use of live video analysis on All Ireland match days for their six counties. With interest in analysis growing as the technology becomes available, this move to outlaw the live filming of games seems unusual.
Counties will not be permitted to record games, but will be given a DVD of the game from RTE afterwards.
Munster GAA chief executive Simon Moroney wrote to the six counties, citing health and safety concerns for their reasons for their decision. Analysts are also banned from press box area. The letter from Moroney via the Irish Examiner:
While technically possible to provide a cabled ‘live feed’ in some locations within certain stadia it raises serious health and safety issues viz a viz the protection of both the patrons and indeed the cable itself en route and the potential disruption if technical failure or other issues arise. There would also be a cost factor falling on the counties requiring same. This option is not therefore permitted.”
There are no regulations on counties agreeing with RTE to supply a wireless live feed, but would prefer if if they used live video feed from the RTE website.
There have been universal criticism of the Munster GAA council over this decision:
Bizarre. Munster GAA effectively ban live in-game analysis by teams. http://t.co/hoX3YzpRQU via @sportforbusiness

The "just use RTE's feed lads, you'll be grand" attitude is the worst. No understanding of what video analysis actually is. Backward.

What a backward step by @MunsterGAA & Mr. Moroney. Different rules for different Provinces! http://t.co/hplbiYgRx1
