Louis Mulqueen has withdrawn as a candidate from the Clare hurling manager selection process leaving just Brian Lohan as the sole figure left in the race.
The news was confirmed on Monday night as Clare continue to search for a replacement for Donal Moloney and Gerry O'Connor.
Mulqueen, who will be over Liam Mellows this Saturday in the Galway county championship semi-final against Cappataggle, issued a statement confirming he was not going to go forward with the process.
“This week I am concentrating on the Galway club semi-final.
“It has been an honour to have been nominated for the position of Clare senior hurling manager and I am grateful for the overwhelming support and good wishes coming in from all sources.
“I now, after careful consideration have decided that I am currently not in a position to allow my name to go forward. I wish the new manager and Clare hurling all the best."
It leaves double All-Ireland winner Lohan set to take charge. The Clare man led UL to the Fitzgibbon Cup in 2015. That was a team that included Tony Kelly, Cathal McInerney and Jack Browne.
