Former Donegal manager Brian McEniff is hopeful that the rumours of Michael Murphy's potential return to the county set-up are true.

Murphy first made his debut for Donegal back in 2007, was made captain at 21 years old in 2011, winning five Ulster titles and one All-Ireand during his time in yellow and green.

After 2022 however, the flying full forward hung up his boots at inter-county level, and arguably Donegal's greatest ever player had officially retired.

When Jim McGuinness was appointed as manager for the 2024 season, many thought Murphy would be tempted to rejoin the panel and reunite with his old manager, but he resisted the temptation and continued his work in the media, and later in as part of the Football Rules Committee, who have been tasked with bringing in new proposals that will make the game more exciting to watch.

Writing in his Donegal Live column, McEniff says that the new rules are part of the reason that these rumours have resurfaced in recent weeks.

"The rumour mill here in Donegal over the last week or so is in overdrive with the word that Michael Murphy might have had a change of heart on his intercounty retirement.

"It is only a rumour at the minute and it would be wrong, disrespectful even, to get carried away. But what I would unequivocally say is that I still feel Michael has more to give.

"If our prayers were answered there is no doubt managers and full-back lines up and down the country would quaking in their boots at the thought of facing a Murphy.

"Even more so, under the new rules, stationed on the edge of the opposition square."

At 35 years of age, Murphy was still playing a starring role for his club Glenswilly in the Donegal club championship, and with the new rules citing that you have to keep three players on the opposite side of the filed at all times, the 2012 All-Ireland winner could cause havoc.
