Michael Lowry proudly announced on Twitter today that he is co-sponsoring the suits worn by the Tipp panel in the lead up to this Sunday. He tweeted a picture of himself standing alongside the suited up Tipp hurlers.
Lowry remains extremely popular within Tipperary, his standing apparently unaffected by the controversies that have raged about his actions as a Minister. The Moriarty tribunal alluded to his 'cynical and venal abuse of office' during his time as a Minister for Communications in the mid-90s and criticised his 'contentious disregard' for his taxation obligations.
Lowry was chairman of the Tipperary County Board during the mid-1980s, appointing Babs Keating to the managerial role in 1986.
In his home-town of Thurles, he remains almost omnipotent. He is, apparently, even able to command the emergency services in the area.
Incredibly, according to one of his 'Team Lowry' councillors, Evelyn Nevin, the easiest way to get an ambulance in Thurles is to ring up Michael Lowry. Speaking in 2013, she said.
If you can get an ambulance in Thurles, fair play to you. If your mother has a heart attack, you’re in trouble. The easiest thing is to ring up Michael and he’ll pull in a favour and get them to come out.
Very happy to have been in a position to co-sponsor the suits for the Tipp Panel. Good luck on Sunday lads. Up Tipp. pic.twitter.com/kX2jKOmq1r
