It then went straight to a penalty shootout which Mayo won 4-1. Prior to the shootout beginning, an announcement was made that only goals - and not points - would count.
Mayo manager James Horan told RTÉ after the game that he and his players knew on Saturday that there was a possibility the game would be decided by a shootout.
The first three penalties were scored by Mayo duo Jason Doherty and Brian Reape with Ryan O'Rourke replying for Leitrim.
Mark Plunkett then missed for Leitrim before Fergal Boland put Mayo 3-1 ahead. After Domhnaill Flynn missed Leitrim's fourth, Evan Regan struck the deciding spot kick.
Mayo will play Galway in the FBD League semi-final next week.
