What a finish. As legendary darts commentator Sid Waddell would say that was the greatest comeback since Lazarus. It was a remarkable comeback from the westerners, who looked dead and buried with just over ten minutes to go after Kevin McManamon's goal put Dublin five points clear.
Mayo fans, and viewers alike thought that that spelled the end of Mayo's Sam hopes for another year, and attributed their loss to that old curse.
It's fascinating to see how quickly people changed their minds in such a short space of time, as Cillian O'Connor got some vital scores to haul Mayo level and earn them a replay for next week in Croke Park:
The pessimism about Mayo actually started much earlier in the game, after a lacklustre first half:
Hope mayo have a plan b, terrible to see bad ball kicked into O Shea , jaysus the sledging and cynicism from dubs, imagine if it was Tyrone
— Daithi regan (@daithi_regan) August 30, 2015
Standard of refereeing here is shocking. AOS couldn't buy a free. #MayoForSam
— Liam Reale (@realer83) August 30, 2015
It's now 1-08 to 0-09 but the doubters are out in force:
Dubs will win this pulling up, eventually. #DUBvMAY @TheSundayGame #MayoForSam
— Eoin O’ Súilleabháin (@eoinpom) August 30, 2015
The stats even seemed to be backing up the Mayo naysayers:
Mayo have missed 6 out of the last 7 shots
— dontfoul (@dontfoul) August 30, 2015
Only three Mayo scorers so far, not good enough. #mayogaa #gaa
— Paul Cunnane (@p_cunnane) August 30, 2015
Mayo's shooting has been woeful. They're well on top since half-time but throwing it away @RTEgaa #DUBvMAY
— Eoin Ryan (@eoinryan101) August 30, 2015
Then Dublin got the goal and went five points clear. Apparently it was "All over for Mayo". Even the curse was mentioned:
All over for Mayo
— Keith Cairns🇮🇪🇵🇸🇪🇺 (@keithcairns) August 30, 2015
The oul curse strikes Mayo again!
— Rós Stafford (@Naknamara) August 30, 2015
We're in bother now. #mayogaa #gaa
— Paul Cunnane (@p_cunnane) August 30, 2015
There's definitely a curse on mayo
— geezer (@geezerking) August 30, 2015
All over for Mayo. #DUBvMAY
— Short Strand (@Short_Strand) August 30, 2015
'Mayo need a goal' ...No, Mayo need the ball first #DUBvMAY
— Niamh (@niamhphelan__) August 30, 2015
Christ. Mayo have just collapsed since the second goal. #DUBvMAY
— Justin Moran (@moranjustin) August 30, 2015
Seems that Mayo really blew it when they couldn't take one of numerous chances to kick an equaliser. Ref has been poor but Mayo had chances.
— Matt Cooper (@cooper_m) August 30, 2015
It must be the Mayo curse!
Not the gazillion or so Mayo wides #DUBvMAY— Richard (@VibesNotFadhbs) August 30, 2015
But wait, a penalty for Mayo?:
Mayo back in game!!
— Keith Cairns🇮🇪🇵🇸🇪🇺 (@keithcairns) August 30, 2015
Some were delighted:
GOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAL from Cillian O'Connor.
— Mayo GAA (@MayoGAA) August 30, 2015
Others didn't know what was going on:
This is bona fide mental #DUBvMAY
— Justin Moran (@moranjustin) August 30, 2015
FT, and they have to do it all over again. Final thoughts from the doubters?
Remarkable finish but still a horrible, nasty game. One change for the replay: different referee required. #DublinVMayo
— Matt Cooper (@cooper_m) August 30, 2015
Oh my God. The last 7 minutes of that match much was more exciting than the rest of it. Just shows, it ain't over til it's over! Gwan Mayo👌🏻
— Niamh (@niamhphelan__) August 30, 2015
What a second half. Great spirit from Mayo but they were very wasteful until final ten minutes. One point from play from forwards! @RTEgaa
