Who could forget Mayo Mick? The man was the talk of the country after he attempted to confront the referee during the All-Ireland semi final replay between Mayo and Kerry in 2014, where it took an army of stewards (and his own daughter) to get him off the pitch.
Kerry would ultimately win out that day. Mayo Mick, or Mick Barrett as he is also known, would receive a one-year ban from all GAA matches for his actions.
But that wouldn't stand in the way of him getting to matches. Speaking to the Irish Mirror, he revealed how he ignored his suspension and went to games, but he did take a few precautions.
I got a year ban from football and it was all GAA matches, needless to say I didn’t carry out any of it.
I was at all the games. I had a wig on me all the time for the year...
I got banned for a year for what I don’t know? I had a big problem with that too.
There was no way out of it. I did try. I spent two days ringing [GAA HQ] in Dublin but I got nothing from them.
Mick will return to the scene of his crime this weekend, when Mayo take on Galway in the qualifiers in Limerick.
While he regrets his actions, he is still convinced that referee Cormac Reilly cost his county the Sam Maguire that year.
The daughter tried [to hold me back] but she didn’t succeed.
I was wondering what he was at and wondering what he was thinking about. Did he want glasses or something to see what was gone wrong and did he know what he was doing...
That man, I’ll never forget him. He robbed an All Ireland off us. There was awful decisions made.
Needless to say if I had caught up with him you wouldn’t know what would’ve happened.
