Mayo are league champions, although it is not in the code you might think. The county's hurlers are Division 2B Champions and have won promotion to 2A after beating Down 1-15 to 0-14.
It comes after Mayo club Tooreen's historic run to an All-Ireland semi-final earlier this year, as the hard work being done within the county finally begins to come towards fruition.
They had a Mayo footballer to thank, with Keith Higgins starring at half-forward. Higgins is a proud Ballyhaunis hurler and opted to play the league campaign with the hurlers for the year. He was in inspired form today including an exceptional score from the sideline.

Kenny Feeney also shone for the Mayo men with 11 points.
The game at Breffni Park needed a pitch inspection before getting the all-clear after snow fell overnight. After four wins from five in their league run, Mayo will now look to build and launch a strong Christy Ring campaign having been promoted to the tournament in 2016. Last year they started well before they were well beaten by Carlow. In the new Championship format, the Christy Ring will operate as the third tier competition.

With only six senior hurling clubs in Mayo, today's result is a testament to the grassroots work done within the county.
