The Kerry coaching staff of 2016/17 will contain a man whose ability to produce moments of magic on a football field is almost mythological.

The great Maurice Fitzgerald will be trying to help Eamonn Fitzmaurice return Sam Maguire to the Kingdom next September, confirmed Kerry GAA on their website today.

Fitzmaurice says in a statement on the website:

I am delighted to welcome Maurice into the Kerry senior football setup. His football knowledge, work ethic and personality will be a huge asset to us.

'Maurice Fitz' had a successful 2-15/16 season with St Mary’s Caherciveen, who he managed to an All-Ireland intermediate title earlier this year after they claimed the Kerry title under his stewardship. He was the 'Footballer of the Year' in 1997 when he helped Kerry end their All-Ireland 'drought' (which lasted eleven years, lucky for some).

But if there is to be a snapshot of Fitzgerald that springs to mind upon hearing his name, it has to be his infamous sideline point in the 2001 All-Ireland quarter final against Dublin. After coming on as a sub Fitzgerald kicked this free to send the game to a replay:
