Martin Carney has spent many largely inoffensive years as an RTE co-commentator. Until this weekend, he has successfully avoided attracting much in the way of public scorn.

However, his rather strange decision to give the Man of the Match award to James O'Donoghue yesterday evening has unleashed the hordes upon him.

Now, all of sudden, everyone is coming out of the woodwork to say how much his commentary gets on their tits.

They've been on his case big time in the opening half of the Ulster final. First off, there's all the jokes about James O'Donoghue's chances of getting Man of the Match.

Then, there was bemusement at his characterisation of Monaghan as 'frenzied but measured', but he saved his finest moment of the first half 'til just before the break. A moment which perhaps hinted at a fondness for David Attenborough.
