Longford Town was the scene of one of Mayo football's darkest hours in 2010 but Ireland's friendliest town (not this writer's opinion but the view of the good people of the Little Mayo facebook page) is getting firmly behind Mayo for this weekend's All-Ireland final.
Commercially it's a very shrewd move. The fast food shops of Longford Town have always been particularly anxious to see Mayo get to Croke Park. Both Supermacs and Luigis (the latter being unarguably the greatest fast food restaurant in the world) have done an exceptionally good trade with westward travelling Mayo supporters on the evening of one of their triumphs/disasters in Croke Park.
There is also an audacious plan to rename several of the streets in Longford Town after Mayo players... and the Longford Leader reports that they are planning to hold events such as an 'Aidan O'Shea haircut competition.'
This fine example of the cementing of links between Mayo and Longford Town comes courtesy of the Little Mayo facebook page and shows James Horan holding Nessa Gavin, the daughter of former Longford Town winger and Castlebar native, Stephen Gavin.
