Eddie Moroney will forever occupy a foul-mouthed, irrationally passionate and largely incoherent realm of his own, but we've found a local commentator to perhaps compete with the rest.
Enter one Paul McCarthy, from County Clare. McCarthy is from the Smith O'Brien's club in Killaloe, and a few years ago, he was charged with providing the commentary for the club's recording of a Clare intermediate hurling final against Clooney Quin from 2004.
It ended in a draw, much to the annoyance of McCarthy, who declaimed during his frenzied commentary that "another free, he's giving them every FUCKING thing. Sorry for the language there, but the referee has played for a draw".
He ends with a magnificent, "I'm off for a pint".
Here is a montage of his best lines, set to the theme tune from Grandstand:
Smith O'Briens won the replay, so if anyone has the presumably incredible euphoric commentary, please send it to [email protected].
In a nice bit of circularity, Cloney-Quin face another county final replay tomorrow, but this time at senior level, against Sixmilebridge.
