The human condition is one of great fallibility. Even the greatest make mistakes. And not even one of our favourite sports broadcasters is immune to the lousy realities of being a human.
Like you all, we here at Balls.ie have great affection for Sunday Game anchor Des Cahill. It is a respect that is shared by most of the country: he was recently voted as the most respected Irish journalist on twitter.
Whilst delivering the sports news on Sean O'Rourke's Radio 1 show yesterday morning, amid the hullabaloo of Paul O'Connell's retirement, things went awry, and you can listen below:
While the information broadcast by Des was not untrue, it was brought to air slightly late: Greenwood had passed away ten years before.
Yesterday was the tenth anniversary of Greenwood's death, and he was honoured by West Ham fans at Upton Park ahead of kick-off against Liverpool. We can only assume that this led to the presenter's mix-up.
Although perhaps it was a case of Des only just being able to come to terms with the deeply affecting news, as he is a West Ham fan:
