Larry McCarthy carried out one of his final duties as GAA president on Wednesday night, handing over the Sigerson Cup to champions Ulster University.
It was an emotional night for Ulster Uni and everyone involved in their GAA setup - especially for John 'Tommy Joe' Farrell - as they claimed the title for the first time since 2008.
Ulster's triumph came after a ruthless first-half performance gave them a comfortable cushion against UCD, allowing them to see off a second-half fightback and hold on for a dramatic six-point victory.
An impressive Ulster Uni roster included both of Tyrone's Canavan brothers - who combined for 0-09 on Wednesday - and Derry forward Niall Loughlin.
It was Down back Ryan Magill who went up to collect the trophy on behalf of Ulster University - but yet another unfortunate gaffe from Larry McCarthy, as he handed over the cup, led to an awkward moment on the podium.

GAA president makes yet another error in post-match speech
McCarthy praised both teams for a brilliant spectacle in Tralee and thanked hosts MTU Kerry and the match officials for making the occasion possible.
However, when the time came to award the Sigerson Cup to the winning captain, McCarthy inexplicably called Magill "Ryan Gillespie" before correcting himself.

It gives me now great pleasure to present the Sigerson Cup to the captain of the Ulster University...foireann...Ryan Gillespie - Magill! Got it wrong again...
The awkwardness of McCarthy insisting on handing over the trophy is another matter, though that is somewhat more understandable for tradition's sake.
Unfortunately, this is not the first such gaffe from the GAA president. Just last month, he mistakenly referred to Kerry inter-county star Paudie Clifford as "Paudie Fitzgerald" when handing over the All-Ireland junior club title to the Fossa captain.

And, back in 2021, he erroneously linked Limerick captain Declan Hannon with the Na Piarsaigh club.
On that occasion, Hannon was quick to correct the GAA president, clarifying that he in fact plays for Adare.

One would think that a simple script or cue cards might have been considered at some point along the road for Larry McCarthy, as he continued to make inexplicable basic errors on the biggest stages.
McCarthy is entering his final week as GAA president, with Armagh man Jarlath Burns set to take over when the GAA's Annual Congress takes place at Croke Park. The first overseas GAA president, the New York man took over from John Horan in 2021.
