Laois footballer Padraig McMahon has retired from the inter-county scene and we're going to applaud him for doing so because his rationale is difficult to argue with.
The former Laois captain withdrew from the panel moments before yesterday's home win against Roscommon. His withdrawal was a surprise for fellow players and fans alike and he was subsequently replaced by Paul Begley.
When asked for the reason for McMahon's sudden departure, Laois manager Tomás Ó'Flatharta said:
As many farmers will know, you're a farmer first and everything else second, including an inter-county footballer.
