Meath and Longford created history last week when they decided their O'Byrne Cup semi-final with a free-kick shootout. Having not realised we waited decades for one, another shootout has come along again in less than a week.
Kilkenny and Wexford's Walsh Cup final at Nowlan Park today finished level after extra-time, 1-24 apiece.
So, improbably, the final was decided by a point scoring competition from just inside the half-way mark Wexford missed their first two efforts, from Paul Morris and Lee Chin. Kilkenny then offered Wexford an avenue back into the game, through misses from Lester Ryan and Alan Murphy.
Mark Fanning then snapped over a point for Wexford, meaning John Walsh had to convert for Kilkenny to send it to sudden death. Incredibly, he fouled the ball as he struck it, meaning that Wexford secured a third-straight win over Kilkenny in the most surreal of circumstances.
Wexford GAA streamed the entire game live, accompanied with some Grade A local commentary from Michael Dwyer.
Enjoy it all below. The shootout begins at 1hr and 28 minutes below.
