The preliminary quarter-finals of the All-Ireland football championship are taking place this weekend. The match-ups for the preliminary quarter-finals round were decided by a draw. The draw produced some intriguing matchups, one of which was Kildare v Monaghan.
Kildare will host Monaghan in their neighbours Offaly's country grounds whilst Newbridge is being redeveloped. The Lilywhites chose Glenisk O'Connor Park as their venue of choice to welcome Monaghan in the next stage of the 2023 All-Ireland football championship.

Kildare v Monaghan: Monaghan's Route to The Preliminary Quarter Finals
Monaghan finished third in Group Four of the All-Ireland football championship group stage. The Monaghan men secured a win against Clare and drew with Derry to put themselves in a comfortable position coming in the last round of the group games last weekend.
Unfortunately for Monaghan they couldn't build on their win and draw, instead they suffered a two-point defeat against Donegal. The Donegal and Monaghan game was a true dog fight with both teams battling for a second-place finish and a home venue for the preliminary quarter-finals.
Vinny Corey's side rallied from six points behind to reduce the deficit to only one single score against Donegal in the final moments of the game. Their last-minute surge proved to be too little too late as Donegal held on to claim the win and pump Monaghan down to a third-spot finish in the group
became a battle for the second slot and a home venue for next weekend. The tempo raised as Monaghan rallied from six points down to within a single score, but a rejuvenated Donegal team held on.

Kildare v Monaghan: Kildare's Route to The Preliminary Quarter Finals
Kildare finished second in Group 3 following after drawing with Sligo, suffering a heavy defeat at the hands of Dublin and claiming a vital one-point victory over Roscommon.
The lily whites clutched a last-minute win right at the death of their game against Roscommon last Saturday. Kildare unlike most years before didn't rush or try to force anything, instead, they were patient in their build-up.
They didn't apply pressure on themselves in the dying moments of the game, even though they knew a win was urgent as it would secure home advantage for the next round.
Kildare used Roscommon's unique style of play against them, keeping possession until a gap in the pitch arose to get their shot away.
Glen Ryan's team felt they had something to prove against Davy Burke's Roscommon side and the rest of the GAA and that they did. One of Kildare's star players Kevin Feely leaped up to catch a looping, high, hopeful ball which was kicked into the corner of the full forward line.
Feely aware of the limited playing time left as the game was now in the third minute of the four added minutes onto the half for extra time, immediately threw up to claim a mark.
Winning the mark wasn't the only difficult thing Feely had to do, he then had to try a kick an awkward angled mark over the bar, with immense pressure, knowing he needed to score if Kildare were to have a home preliminary quarter-final.
Soaking up all the pressure, Feely rose to the occasion, keeping Kildares All-Ireland hopes alive with a home game against Monaghan up next.
