For those of you who managed to maintain a stranglehold on consciousness, you will presumably never forget the ordeal that was this year's Donegal County Final. Kilcar won an, er, intriguing tactical battle on the chastening scoreline of 0-07 to 0-04. Those disenchanted at the 0-06 to 0-03 halftime scoreline would go on to pine for such excitement. Not that the denizens of Kilcar were bothered, this ended their 24-year wait for a county title, with Mark McHugh rubbishing the notion that such a game somehow signalled the Death of Club Football.
Kilcar gave the perfect riposte to those critics yesterday, however, in shocking Monaghan's Scotstown in the Ulster club championship. It was a comfortable victory, too, with Kilcar almost trebling their county final total, winning 1-16 to 1-6.
Scotstown have won the last three Monaghan championships, but couldn't summon an adequate response to phenomenal performances from two of Donegal's stars: Ryan McHugh and Paddy McBreaty scored 0-13 between them.
McBrearty scored eight points to continue his very fine 2017 - he will attend Friday's All-Star banquet as a nominee.
After the triumph, Kilcar tweeted that rumours of the demise of football in the county have been exaggerated:
The next challenge will be their greatest yet: a semi-final against the mighty Slaughtneil.
