Whatever your feelings towards the Late Late Show, it's hard not to sit up and take notice when there's a GAA legend like Joe Canning on to have an in-depth chat with host Patrick Kielty.

The Portumna man who has just celebrated his 35th birthday is still lining out for his clubs senior side having called it a day on the inter-county scene in 2021. Canning proudly holds the record for most sideline cuts scored with an impressive 28 to his name.

A 5-time all-star, the Galway man will go down as one of the best ever to lift a hurl and was instrumental in the Tribesman lifting Liam McCarthy in 2017 and ended the season by being named Hurler of the Year.

Joe Canning's Late Late appearance

Since his retirement from the Galway ranks, Canning is one of the main pundits on The Sunday Game's hurling coverage. His popularity is growing year-on-year as his unapologetic honesty increases over time.

When appearing on RTÉ's main chat show, Canning had a typically wholesome story about his late mother:

She was a silent, strong-willed kind of a woman, I was probably only 10 at the time, we were in Kilimer which is next door to us playing Kiltormer, Mam is from Kiltormer originally and my granny was with her. There was a guy outside the car and he didn't realise the window was open a little and he was shouting 'cut the f*ckin legs from under him' about me on the pitch. He came to her funeral a long time later and me and dad were smiling to each other.

When asked by host Patrick Kielty if his mam had reacted to the outburst from the man regarding her son, Canning was quick to acknowledge how long she had stayed silent for:

She never said a thing (For 20 years), he doesn't even know this. Me and dad had a little smile, mam would've laughed at it. She never really spoke to him after that (Incident).

As he holds on for another year to play with his nephew Jodie, Joe will be a massive loss to the game of hurling as the magic he has produced on the field over the last 20 years was phenomenal.
