There isn't a single honour in senior hurling that Joe Canning hasn't won.

The Galway legend did it all during his playing career, claiming an All-Ireland medal in 2017 as Player of the Year for Galway, and winning provincial, county, and All-Ireland medals across his club and inter-county career.

Ask anyone who the greatest hurler of modern times is and there's every chance they'll give you Canning's name (especially if they come from out Portumna way).

However, for the retired Tribesman, there is still one lingering regret from his career.

Canning's point to seal the 2017 semi-final win against Tipperary is widely held as the greatest moment of his inter-county career, and it spurred Galway on to claim Liam MacCarthy for the first time in 29 years. The following year would bring heartbreak at the final hurdle.

Joe Canning reveals regret about 2018 All-Ireland hurling final

Having been eight points down at the outset of injury time, Galway found themselves trailing by just one in the dying moments of the 2018 All-Ireland hurling final against Limerick.

When they won a free on the edge of their own 45, Portumna man Joe Canning stepped up to try and deliver yet again for Galway.

Canning hit an absolute monster of a shot - but it dropped short, Limerick reclaimed the ball and, seconds later, the final whistle declared the Treaty men All-Ireland champions.

Speaking on the Joe Molloy podcast this week to promote his newly-released autobiography, Joe Canning revealed that the 2018 final lingers as one of the biggest regrets of his illustrious inter-county career.

There's obviously stuff that you'd love to have back, like that free in '18.

I tried to hit it too hard, I mishit it. The distance, adrenaline, different stuff...you have sweaty hands, it's late in a game...that's one [moment] that annoys me. That's one thing that I'd probably think back on of "I'd love to have another crack at that."

We're sure you'd be hard-pressed to find anyone in Galway who holds it against Canning, given everything he delivered for his county in over a decade of immense service.

However, he would go on to reveal that Limerick natives are not slow to remind him of the free. In fact, Canning said that he had gifted the hurl he had missed the free with to none other than JP McManus.

A lot of it has got to do with [the fact] I get reminded of it a lot in Limerick now!

[The hurl] was in my car. We were playing and JP was inside. I said, 'It will give you better memories than it will give me.' I think he has it in his bar at home.

It's an unusual bit of memorabilia to have but we're sure McManus was grateful for Canning's generosity.

And, even if the pain of the 2018 final still lingers with Joe Canning, he at least has the winner's medal from the previous year as comfort.
