For some reason, the redevelopment of Casement Park has proven to be a massive point of contention in Northern Ireland in recent times.

The Belfast stadium has long been in need of refurbishment, with the last events taking place there all the way back in 2013. Since then, it has fallen into disrepair.

It has been difficult to get funding for the stadium since then, despite assurances from the GAA. It was hoped that the inclusion of Casement Park in the successful bid for Euro 2028 would resolve this issue, although that has not proven to be the case.

Indeed, unionist politicians have only strengthened their stance that UK public money should not be invested into the ground.

Despite both Windsor Park and Kingspan Stadium being redeveloped in recent season, unionists have insisted that Casement Park receives no funding from the UK Government.

One unionist caller attempted to make this point once again on BBC Radio today, although he would make a hilarious error in the process. His big concern was that once Casement Park was redeveloped, it would be change names in order to honour a republican.

If we ever get Casement Park built, for some reason it's fairly important, you mark my words.

How long will it be before the name is changed on Casement Park? We're not stupid, we didn't come up the Lagan on a bubble.

That's exactly what I can see. It will be named after some glorious punter in this world, in some people's eyes.

It seems this caller is not that all familiar with the current name of the stadium.

It is named after Roger Casement, a republican who was executed by the British for treason back in 1916 due to his attempts to raise military aid for the Easter Rising.

When you hear arguments such as this, you really get the sense of what type of people are railing against the redevelopment of Casement Park.
