Amid the chaos and horror of last week's Dublin riots, the antics of Conor McGregor stood depressingly tall on Irish social media.

The Irish MMA fighter has become increasingly outspoken in recent years, and it felt inevitable that he would weigh in as unruly behaviour took charge over the capital city last Thursday.

Rioting kicked off in Dublin after the horrific stabbing of school children and their carer on Parnell Square in the city centre early on Thursday afternoon.

The day before, McGregor had tweeted "Ireland, we are at war".

His presence on social media was only to become more prominent in the aftermath of the stabbings in Dublin, and he received widespread condemnation for his comments, as he made incendiary remarks during the riots.

McGregor was absent from Katie Taylor's victorious homecoming on Saturday night after his remarks, and is now the subject of a Garda investigation to determine if his comments incited violence.

Joe Brolly added his voice to the chorus condemning McGregor. At the Gig for Gaza in the 3Arena on Tuesday, the Derryman launched a spot-on tirade against the fighter.

The 1993 All-Ireland winner ripped into McGregor's hostile remarks towards immigrants and his calls to close the Irish border. He noted that the man who had stopped the attacker in his tracks had in fact been an immigrant.

"And Conor McGregor," said Brolly before a chorus of boos followed from the crowd.

"I promised my wife I wouldn't call him a c*nt! (laughs)

"When Conor McGregor tweeted that any building that might be earmarked for refugees or immigrants should be 'evaporated' by his followers, and then said, 'Ireland, we are at war', it illustrated the fantasy of hatred.

"Who are we at war with? With Brazilian Deliveroo drivers who save children's lives outside a nursery? With Filipino student nurses who spent ten minutes frantically trying to save a small child's life? At war with bus drivers, with black people, with trans people, with librarians? With our gay friends and neighbours? Who are we at war with?

"When I engaged publicly with McGregor and made a very public report to the guards about what I believed to be criminal offences, serious criminal offences that unleashed a deluge of hate...

"As me mother said, 'Get in the queue'."

Meanwhile, the Gig for Gaza raised over €200,000 for medical aid for Palestine, amid the ongoing Hamas-Israel conflict.
