Joe Brolly is a massive fan of Donegal captain Michael Murphy. After Donegal's three point win over Tyrone on Sunday, the RTÉ trio of the Derryman along with Pat Spillane and Colm O'Rourke entered into an impassioned debate about the importance of Murphy.
Channelling Con Houlihan, Brolly came out with a great line to describe the debate about where Murphy should be deployed on the pitch. He also said that in his view, the Donegal man is the most influential player in Gaelic football.
I know that there's a view that playing him off the square is like hiring the prize bull from the ministry and then using him to plough the field.
But he has been the one indispensable in the rise of Donegal. The one indispensable player. He has no ego. He slogged his guts out all over the field today. And then when it came to it, he nailed two truly great frees to kill the game.
He is in my view the most influential player in Gaelic football. Given the base Donegal came from to where they are.
Spillane and O'Rourke both disagreed about Murphy being the most influential player in the game. In fact, O'Rourke said that it was a stupid thing to say.
