Jim Gavin confirmed during the week that his tenure as Dublin manager would extend until the end of the 2017 season. It was good news for Dublin football and good news for those who enjoy an aesthetically pleasing game.
Those in the media who must wring noteworthy quotes from Gavin however probably did not rejoice. Speaking to Clare McNamara before Dublin's facile victory against Longford, he gave probably the most typically Jim Gavin interview you'll hear.
If it was another manager then you might consider the possibility that there was a wager to see how many cliches he could possibly jam into a one minute interview. He does not strike you as this type of individual however.
He started off steadily.
1. We don't look over the hedge.
2. We're focussed on the challenges for today and that's all.
Once settled, he shot them out with machine gun-like action.
3. One game at a time.
4. It's all about the day.
5. We live in the present.
6. Not looking too far forward or too far back.
7. All about the here and now for us today.
And to cap it all off.
8. Picked based on performance.
