Championship season is now in full swing, with the remainder of the provincial football finals played out this this weekend ahead of the start of the Sam Maguire round next week.

As always, the Ulster Championship offered up some compelling stories with Jim McGuinness returning Donegal back to prominence in the province, while Armagh also impressed en route to reaching another Ulster final.

In recent years there has been changes made to both the Gaelic football and hurling championships. The introduction of the All-Ireland round in Gaelic football was a huge alteration last year, but that has not stopped many prominent voices within the GAA from calling for even more sweeping changes moving forward.

While many would like to see some big changes made to championship structures in the near future, it seems that the current GAA President is not quite as keen on the idea.

Speaking on BBC NI this afternoon, Jarlath Burns said that his status as an Ulster native meant that the provincials were likely to continue to be a major part of the GAA calendar during his tenure.

Anybody who asks me about provincial finals and making changes to the championship, I say 'well I'm an Ulster man and there won't be any changes during my three years!'

That's all I have to say.

Jarlath Burns has only been in the role as GAA president for less than six months, but he's been a popular fixgure so far. His rousing speeches at the league finals coupled with his willingness to discuss fan wishes like playing All-Ireland Finals in September has resulted in quite a bit of praise.

Coupled that with bringing rugby back to Croke Park and adding another match to Supervalu Páirc Uí Chaoimh, Burns has made positive business moves that should benefit the future of the GAA. The GAA's future looks to be in safe hands.
