Today, Kilkenny hurling legend Jackie Tyrrell announced his retirement from the inter-county game. It's been quite the journey for Jackie, establishing himself as one of the greatest defenders of his generation. But he has also garnered quite the reputation for himself as a kind of hurling equivalent of Paul Galvin, dressing with style and 'panache' as Eamon Dunphy might say.

But, like the aforementioned Kerryman, it wasn't always the case. There is a point a few years ago when modern Jackie was formed. Until then it was a very different beast that patrolled the full-back line for James Stephens and Kilkenny.
