Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta is taking place this weekend in Cill na Martra - hosts of this year’s event - in Co. Cork. The event is primarily a football tournament in which clubs from the seven Gaeltacht areas, as well as clubs from Dublin and Antrim, take part in and compete to win the Comórtas.
But the Comórtas is something bigger than just football - it’s a real chance for the Gaeltacht communities to come together and celebrate their culture through an event like this.

TG4’s involvement with the Comórtas
Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta was founded in 1969, and ‘it’s a very special occasion,’ says Maidhcí Ó Súilleabháin, Executive Director Sport at Nemeton TV. TG4’s involvement is central to the Comórtas - they are an official partner of the event, and they will have the use of several different broadcasting platforms this weekend, such as the Spórt TG4 YouTube channel, and the TG4 Player app, to show as many live games as possible.
Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta is a special highlight for TG4, particularly for the Gaeltacht audience who watch the Comórtas.
It’s important for TG4 that the broadcasting of these matches are of a high standard.
If the games aren’t on television, they will be broadcasted on the Spórt TG4 YouTube channel.
There will be live broadcasts across the entire weekend - on YouTube on Saturday and Sunday, and on television on Sunday and Monday.
The use of YouTube allows the Comórtas to reach a wider audience - something that is importanat for the visibility and awareness of the event. It also makes it easier for people looking to support and follow their teams.

Why Gaeltacht culture is essential to the Comórtas
It’s a huge honour for any club to host the Comórtas, and this year the honour falls to Cill na Martra GAA Club, in the Muskerry Gaeltacht area. There is always emphasis placed on the culture of the area in which the Comórtas is taking place - for example young musicians from the area will play in between matches and at half-time.
It’s an important occasion for the Gaeltacht communities, who are able to spend the weekend watching sport, speaking Irish to one another and enjoy themselves.
The people from the Gaeltacht areas being able to meet up with one another is a highlight of the weekend.
It gives people a chance to meet up with old friends, people have opportunities to make new friends with people from different Gaeltacht areas.
It’s a great chance for people to meet, get to know one another, to be together and to have sport as a central element to it all.
It’s set to be a great weekend full of sport and fun in Cill na Martra.
