Update 16th July 2016:
was trying to be friendly
— Daithi regan (@daithi_regan) July 16, 2016
Daithí Regan could have received three separate red cards.
The 1999 Leinster Hurling Final was contested between Offaly and Kilkenny. Naturally it was expected to be a tight affair, a repeat of the previous years All-Ireland final where Offaly had beaten The Cats to claim the Liam McCarthy Cup.
However in the year that brought first provincial titles for both Brian Cody and Henry Shefflin, the Leinster Final was not a close contest, and Kilkenny beat The Faithful by an emphatic scoreline of 5-14 to 1-16.
Daithí Regan was coming towards the end of his Offaly career and he came off the bench in the second half to mark Andy Comerford, who was in blistering form at the time. Regan decided to have a go, and have a go he did with interest.
First the hurl, then the half hurl, then the punch.
Thanks to Johnny Keane for alerting us to this clip.
And just like that, Daithí Regan sets arguably the all-time standard on how to get sent off in a hurling match.
