Carlow rising is trending once again as Cliodhna Ní Shé scored 2-4 as Bennekerry/Tinryland made history by defeating Galway’s Annaghdown in the AIB All-Ireland Intermediate Club Championship final  2-10 to 1-7 in Croke Park.

To their credit, Annaghdown did reduce the gap with four consecutive points from Ciara Hegarty and skipper Riona Quinn in the closing moments, but it wasn’t enough to spoil the Bennekerry/Tinryland party.

Speaking after the game, player of the match Lauren Dwyer couldn’t believe first of all that her side had won and secondly that she had been given the node for her performance on the day.

“I don’t think it sunk in,” Dwyer said.

"We knew we needed to stay in the game at halftime, and we did. To be honest, I don’t know what you were looking at because I thought 15 other players deserved it more than I do. It hasn’t sunk in.

We knew we just had to stay in the game. We were a few points up. I don’t think the first half was the best performance we’ve ever put in, so we knew we could drive on. There was another gear there, and thankfully, we kept the scoreboard ticking and were All-Ireland champions.

I wasn’t used to the hooter going. I was waiting for the ref to blow the whistle, so I think I was celebrating before the referee blew his whistle, but the crowd they came up from Carlow was unbelievable from the minute we stepped out on the pitch; I'm so happy that we could put Carlow on the map with an All-Ireland.

At the end of the day, we're family. Unbelievable words cannot describe how we feel right now.

Carlow ladies football is well and truly on the rise.
