Form Guide
UL have made the final again this year after narrowly losing to NUIG in last year's decider. En route to the final UL overcame DCU by three goals in the semi-finals, as well as recording wins against NUIG and SETU Carlow. Their only loss in the competition this year came at the hands of TU Dublin. UCC who last won the competition in 2019 took on that TU Dublin side in their semi-final, coming through it with just two points to spare on a scoreline of 1-12 to 0-13. UCC also drew twice against Queens and then St.Marys in the quarter-final before winning on penalties, as well as recording a comprehensive win against ATU Galway earlier in the competition.
This same fixture was also played out in the first round of the competition when UCC hosted UL in Cork. UL scraped a win that day when only three points separated the sides. Undoubtedly that game will be prevalent in the minds of all the students lining out to play on Wednesday. UCC will be keen for revenge after the last day out and will want to show that they've earned their place in the final, after a number of close results. On the other hand, UL will probably feel they've had the tougher fixtures to get to the final and ultimately have been more successful in the competition so far, considering the games they've won. Whatever the result, when you have some of the country's finest footballers lining up against each other in a local derby you should expect nothing less than a brilliant game.
Team News
With starting teams set to be released on the day, we've got the top players you should be looking out for on Wednesday night. Both universities play host to some of the country's best footballers. Galway's Conor Flaherty is the man between the posts for UL, he 's the obvious choice after an impressive league campaign with Galway last year. His opposite number Dylan Foley, had a brilliant day out for UCC against TUD, and ultimately proved to be the difference when the shootout came at the quarter-final stage.
As well as Foley, it will be well worth keeping your eye on Kerry duo Ruairí Murphy who won a Kerry SFC with East Kerry, and Jack Kissane who ran for Ireland at underage and has clearly brought that skill to his football, evidenced by a cracker of a goal against MTU earlier in the competition. UL's Paul Walsh is another young prospect who has shone throughout the competition, including an amazing goal against NUIG. He's not unmatched in the UL squad either with Mayo's Eoghan McLoughlin proving to be a real threat as well.
