A group of five friends from Roscommon are undertaking an ambitious challenge of kicking 32 points in all 32 counties of Ireland.
Brian Kelly, Eoghan Diffley, Emmet Burke, Ciaran McManus and Conor Murphy, all aged between 22 and 23, are embarking on the challenge around Ireland. The group includes four members from St. Barry's GAA Club in Tarmonbarry, Co. Roscommon (Eoghan, Emmet, Ciaran and Conor), along with Brian Kelly from Cashel football club in Longford.
Their goal is to kick points in all 32 counties of Ireland, visiting a different club pitch in each county.
The group got together in the middle of January and decided to take on the challenge to support Conor's mother, Nicola Murphy. Nicola was recently diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease, and the five young men are determined to raise funds for her.
Motor Neurone Disease is a progressive neurological condition which attacks the nerves in the brain and spinal cord. Messages gradually stop reaching the muscles which leads to weakness and wasting. MND can affect how you walk, talk, eat and breathe. Motor Neurone disease is a progressive disease for which there is no remission.
While MND can present in various ways, Nicola is currently experiencing weakness in both her arms and legs, to the extent that she has no function in some of her limbs and evolving weakness in the remaining areas.
The fundraiser will take place on the weekend from Friday, May 10th, until Sunday, May 12th, over 32 hours. A Go Fund Me page has been set up, with a percentage of all funds going to a charity of Nicola's choice. A launch night will be held in the Shannon Bar, Tarmonbarry on Saturday, March 30th at 8pm.
