The bookies had the contest neck and neck between Donoghue and Cuala manager and former Galway selector Mattie Kenny.

Donoghue managed Clarinbridge to the All-Ireland club title in 2011. He has worked as part of Eamon O'Shea's backroom team in Tipperary for the past two years.

His brother Liam is a former Galway goalkeeper who captained the team to the All-Ireland final in 2005.

Galway Bay say that former Galway hurler Frannie Forde, who works as a hurling analyst with the station, will be a part of his backroom team.
