What's at stake in Galway v Westmeath?
A win this weekend for Galway would secure their place beyond the round-robin. Having beat Tyrone by three two weeks ago, a win over Westmeath would leave them top of the table with four points and guaranteed to finish in the top three.
While a win or draw for the underdogs Westmeath would make qualifying for the next stage of the competition an awful lot easier.
Form Guide
After narrowly losing the Division One league final to local rivals Mayo, Galway went on to win the Connacht SFC, comfortably beating Roscommon and Sligo in the process. They then enjoyed a lengthy lay-off before taking on Tyrone two weeks ago in round one of the round-robin series, a game they won 0-16 to 0-13 in what was possibly a closer result than expected, albeit a decent win considering Tyrone's defensive prowess.
Since the start of the season, Padraic Joyce has set them up to be a team to beat, with the Tribesmen looking like serious Sam Maguire contenders especially if the likes of Damien Comer and Shane Walsh continue to light things up.
Westmeath on the other hand are the underdogs in group two. They're here on merit after winning last year's Tailteann Cup but they'll have an uphill battle to get out of the group. They finished mid-table in Division Three of the Allianz Leagues before going out to Mickey Harte's Louth by just two points in the Leinster quarter-final.
They took on Armagh in round one of the round-robin and despite being underdogs lost by just a single point away from home. This Westmeath team have potential but ultimately struggles to come up with winning plays to see out games. Anything but a Galway win on Saturday would be a big surprise, with the Tribesmen simply too good for this developing Westmeath team.
