GAAGO Pundits Point Out Issue That Will Stop Mayo Competing For An All-Ireland

Mayo earned their second win of the All-Ireland round robin series this evening, defeating Roscommon on a scoreline of 2-14 to 1-15 at Dr Hyde Park.

It was a game that was very close throughout, even if Mayo did look like the more dominant team for large spells. Their lack of sharpness in front of goal certainly allowed the Rossies to stay in the game, even after opening up a six-point lead in the closing stages of the match.

An injury time penalty from Conor Cox in injury time would get Roscommon back within striking distance, but they could not get another goal to level the game despite some late pressure.

In the end, Mayo would run out as two-point winners.

GAAGO pundits point out major issue in Mayo team

Mayo may have won their opening two games of the All-Ireland group stage, but some feel that they are still lacking the cutting edge needed to make them true contenders to life the Sam Maguire this summer.

Speaking on GAAGO, both Marc Ó Sé and Paddy Andrews suggested that their lack of fire power in the final third means that they are not currently in the running to win the All-Ireland.

Ó Sé: Kevin McStay will look at the video and where they need to improve. The big thing for me is the scoring threat. They're building the play, working the ball up the field.

It's the score getters that I feel aren't there at the moment. I think come business end of the championship, that's where Mayo will be found wanting...

Andrews: If you ask any of the Mayo players or Kevin McStay, their ambition is to win the All-Ireland. They're not interested in anything else, they've been on the road so long together.

We are judging them by that standard. There were positives for Mayo from today and they're two from two (in the All-Ireland round robin). They play Dublin in a straight shootout to see who will top the group, you imagine Dublin will get the job done here (against Cavan).

There are positives for Mayo, but in terms of overall quality, the scoring threat is really going to hurt them when it comes to the business end of the championship.

Mayo still have time to improve in this area of the game, although they do seem like they will need to provide more fire power if they are to challenge the best counties in the competition later this summer.

Still, they have shown in the past that they are capable of pulling it out of the bag on the big stage.
