Former GAA goalkeeper and 2013 Balls.ie Man Of The Year Shane Curran is is to run as a Fianna Fáil candidate in the Roscommon-Galway constituency in the general election.
While rumours had been circulating over the weekend, the news was confirmed by Irish Times writer Sarah Bardon on Sunday evening.

While this will no doubt bring a smile to the face of Roscommon GAA fans, the news is not believed to be going down too well with members of the Fianna Fáil party, with one unnamed member telling Bardon:
Shane did not run for convention. I don't even think he is a member of the party.
Party leaders would undo everything if they did that.
This news makes Curran's comments back in August all the more interesting, as he proclaimed that GAA was 'going the way of the Catholic church and Fianna Fáil' on The Sunday Game:
The GAA is the last great social pillar in the country, after the fall of the (Catholic) Church and Fianna Fáil and all the other establishments. It’s what keeps the rural fabric together.
We'll wait and see what transpires following the announcement, as Curran himself is yet to comment publicly.
