Sunday morning in Galway was a lot like five others supporters of their hurling team have experienced since the turn of the millennium: it was All-Ireland hurling final day.
There were a couple of minor differences. It was a novel pairing for the final, the first ever meeting between Galway and Waterford in an All-Ireland final. Galway were also favourites to claim Liam MacCarthy, a tag unknown to them in recent times.
Mass over in Clonbur yesterday morning Fr. Gerry called on his parishioners to sing the Fields of Athenry.
Congregant Niamh Holleran McGing was there to capture the moment and she also wrote:
Fr Gerry (a mayo man himself) said days like today start in small parishes and it's important that we recognise the huge efforts put in!
With that he announced we'd sing Fields of Athenry.
