Tipp legend Eoin Kelly - who was playing as goalkeeper - was named Man of the Match as his side defeated Nenagh Éire Óg in the final round of group games in the Tipperary Senior Hurling Championship on Sunday.

Mullinahone won the game 2-21 to 1-16 to secure a place in the quarter-finals. They had led by eight points at the break, but Nenagh - who had three players sent off during the game - fought back in the second half.

There were just three points between the sides when Mullinahone were awarded a 47th minute penalty. The 41-year-old Kelly - one of Tipperary's greatest ever forwards - made his way forward to strike the sliotar. However, as he did so, he got a "right shot" from Nenagh's Ben West who the referee then sent off. Kelly scored the penalty to put his side ahead 2-17 to 1-14.

"I got a right shot coming up the pitch but that's what you probably expect," Kelly, who captained Tipperary to the 2010 All-Ireland title, told Clubber TV following their coverage of the game.

"You'd be disappointed for the lad that hit me. I don't even know who he is. He'll probably feel silly tomorrow morning.

"You'd love to be out the field. You play where you are picked and that's it. I suppose the keeper is more involved, getting balls back and that, so that makes it a small bit more interesting. Years ago when I was [in goal], you just pucked it out."

Mullinahone finished second in the group. They had beaten JK Brackens in the opening round and then lost to Drom and Inch a fortnight ago.

"We came here today to win," said Kelly.

"When the game started, we realised Nenagh were missing couple of players. We were prepared that they'd come with everybody.

"Then they had one or two men sent off. We have to be realistic here: We beat a 13-man Nenagh team. There was a strong breeze there that we had in the first half, they clawed their way back into the game. It's unfortunate that they lost a couple of players. Their discipline, they'll look at it as it let them down.

"It's a win for a small little club hoping to keep us going for the next couple of years. That's where it is. We're trying to develop.

"I'm involved with the underage. We're trying to keep the underage coming through. When they come into Semple Stadium and see us in a quarter-final, that's inspiring them. That's all we can do.

"I'm delighted for Jack Shelly, our player-manager, who took us on this year when nobody really wanted it. He's after proving everyone wrong, even maybe within the club, and further afield that we've got ourselves into a quarter-final."
