Aherlow defeated Stradbally in the Munster intermediate football championship on Sunday, with former Tipperary footballer Barry Grogan delivering an outstanding display.

Grogan scored 1-8 as Aherlow ground out a hard fought win in Fraher Field, advancing to the semi-finals of the competition where they'll take on Clare's Wolfe Tones Na Sionna.

Grogan was a stalwart of the Tipperary footballers for years and is still going strong at 38, producing a wide-range of scores in Aherlow's triumph.

He scored six frees and two from play, some off the right and some off the left, as well as a fisted goal, rolling back the years for Aidan Kiely's team.

The game was shown on Clubber with Aherlow native Effin Eddie Moroney in the commentary box, rejoicing at the quality of Grogan's scores and the team's victory.

"You only get one of them now and again," Moroney said as Grogan curled over his second free, "and we have him."

"He did a Maurice Fitzgerald here in Fraher Field with the outside of the boot," Moroney exclaimed as Grogan spun a beauty over the bar late on.

Moroney is renowned in GAA circles for his incredible commentary of the Tipperary under-21 final between Aherlow and Nenagh in 1992, producing a number of famous lines.

"My false teeth are coming out," he said that day, "I cant keep them in. Ref for Jaysus sake that's a f**kin penalty. The b*****. He must have no wipers in his glasses."

Aherlow have some history in the Munster club championships, competing in the semi-finals in the senior grade in 2010/2011 where the only lost to Dr Crokes in extra-time.

They also reached the semi-finals in 2006, defeating Limerick's Fr Caseys before losing to the Nire of Waterford in a replay.

Effin Eddie will be hoping they can go one step further this time.
