If there's one thing we have learned over the last few years, it's that we cannot have a real GAA summer unless there is some sort of controversy surrounding championship fixtures.

The latest version of this dynamic played out over the last few days, with it being suggested that Saturday's All-Ireland hurling quarter-finals should switch slots with Sunday's Tailteann Cup semi-finals. Wexford brought the motion forward, with the GAA putting it to a vote as some questioned whether they should give the small ball code further promotion.

However, the motion did not receive the 60% majority that was needed in order for it to pass. The fixtures will now remain in their original slots.

Kilkenny legend questions why RTÉ have prioritised Euro 2024 over hurling

Plenty of big figures in hurling have questioned the coverage that the sport has received in recent seasons, with this weekend's games providing the latest example.

Writing in the Irish Independent, Kilkenny legend Eddie Brennan asked why RTÉ seemingly viewed hurling as a lower priority than Euro 2024, which kicked off in Germany over the weekend.

It’s disappointing that our national games would ever be forced to play second fiddle to a soccer tournament Ireland are not even playing in, one that seems to be taking precedence with our national broadcaster.

We’re dealing with a very short championship window which is being squeezed even further now. If Ireland were playing in Germany, it’d be fair enough, but they’re not.

There are only five matches left in the All-Ireland hurling championship and we should be showcasing every one of them properly.

Major tournaments in soccer have been a backbone of RTÉ's sports coverage for decades, something that is always the case irrespective of Ireland qualifying or not.

However, some feel that hurling should be given priority as it reaches the latter stages of the championship.
